Justice

“One Nation, under God, with Liberty and Justice for All”

Words have power and those are incredibly powerful words. The power they wield is in their meaning.

What is the Justice we seek?

We tend to think of justice as harming someone else because they harmed us, legalized revenge with a moral license.

An eye for and eye and a tooth for a tooth

Honestly, if you think about it at all, that can’t be what true justice is. What we’ve been sold as justice is nothing more than getting even at best. At worst it’s trading one injustice for another until society collapses under the weight of its own guilt.

I believe justice is something quite different but also something we’re intimately familiar with. It’s our tendency to justify every act we commit. I know that in my Work I have to justify not only everything I’ve done to others, but also everything others have done to me, and everything we’ve done to each other. The justice I seek is not revenge, but justification. Instead of calling foul on everything that looks bad, I try to justify it by looking at it from opposing angles. I’m trying to find a way of looking at it that makes sense because I really believe in Humanity.

I call foul on just about everything initially, but then my mind has to grapple with everything in an effort to understand. As much as I love calling foul on everything and hate to admit it, I seem to be gaining that understanding… slowly but surely. It doesn’t come easy, I’m constantly wrestling with opposing angles and getting beaten and bruised in the process, but I keep fighting because I realize that understanding is our only hope.

What I want is a way to justify every single act we’ve ever committed against one another. We can’t change what’s happened, what’s done is done and cannot be undone. That irreversible permanence seems bad on the surface, but it’s a very good thing looking deeper. It means when we’re able to see every single act we’ve committed against one another as an act we’ve performed for and with each other, we will have the true justice we seek… for All… and none can be undone.
